Innoceana hosts educational workshops on ocean plastic pollution awareness.

Between October 2023 and June 2024, Innoceana Tenerife organized 6 educational workshops aimed at raising awareness about plastic pollution in the oceans and its harmful effects on marine ecosystems. These workshops were designed for participants aged 5 to 12 years as well as adults, attracting 106 people from 11 different nationalities.

The workshops focused on hands-on activities that encouraged participants to engage creatively with the issue of plastic pollution. Crafting activities were a central part of the sessions, where participants used plastic waste collected from marine clean-ups to create artistic projects. This activity served as a reminder of the amount of plastic that ends up in the ocean and the impact it has on marine life.

In addition to the creative aspect, the workshops provided interactive learning opportunities. Participants explored the ecosystems of the Canary Islands, with a focus on seagrass and its vulnerability to plastic pollution. Virtual reality experiences and microscope observations of marine life and plastic debris helped deepen their understanding of how pollution disrupts these fragile ecosystems.

The workshops also included educational parts that provided insights into Innoceana Tenerife’s ongoing efforts to protect the environment. Participants were introduced to the environmental challenges specific to the Canary Islands, learning about local marine fauna and the broader global issue of plastic waste in the oceans.

Through these workshops, Innoceana Tenerife is fostering a deeper understanding of the importance of environmental conservation. By engaging people of all ages, the organization is helping to spread awareness and inspire action to combat plastic pollution, ensuring a cleaner and healthier ocean for future generations.
