PLAST4H2 research presented at the “Plastics, Environment, Health” Research Network Meeting in France

From 23 to 25 June, Gaëtan Burgaud  from LUBEM-UBO participated in the “Plastics, Environment, Health” Research Network (GDR) meeting held in Boulogne-sur-Mer, France.

During the conference, a poster entitled “Isolation and high-throughput screening of fungi associated with beached plastics for polymer degradation potential” was presented. The work showcases research carried out at LUBEM by Juliette Illien, Emmanuel Coton, and colleagues, in collaboration with several PLAST4H2 partners, including A. de la Moneda (Innoceana) and B. S. Chee and C. Venkatesh from the Technological University of the Shannon (TUS), Midlands Midwest.

The study focuses on the isolation and characterization of fungi naturally colonising beached plastic debris collected along the coast of Tenerife. These microorganisms are being investigated for their ability to degrade different plastic polymers, contributing to the identification of promising biological resources for more sustainable plastic waste valorisation.

This collaborative research represents an important step towards identifying microorganisms with the potential to contribute to the biological degradation and valorisation of plastic waste. The knowledge generated will support PLAST4H2’s objective of developing innovative, circular solutions that transform end-of-life plastics into valuable resources, including renewable hydrogen and other high-value products.

Participation in the GDR meeting also provided an excellent opportunity to exchange knowledge with experts, strengthen scientific collaborations, and disseminate the latest progress achieved within the PLAST4H2 project.
