The campaign “Tu Decides. El Mar lo nota” (“You Decide. The Sea feels it”) reaches more than 11,200 people on 31 beaches in Cantabria during the summer.

The Government of Cantabria, through the public company Medio Ambiente, Agua, Residuos y Energía (MARE), has concluded the environmental awareness campaign “Tu Decides. El Mar lo nota” (“You Decide. The Sea feels it”), carried out during July and August 2025 within the framework of the European project PLAST4H2, with a balance of 40 communication and environmental education actions on 31 beaches in the region.

Throughout the summer, the information points set up on different beaches in Cantabria raised awareness among 11,210 people about the effects of plastic waste on seas and oceans, as well as the importance of reducing its consumption, properly separating waste, and adopting responsible consumption habits.

During these activities, 3,990 magnets and 8,610 leaflets were distributed, specifically designed to remind citizens of the need to become actively involved in the protection of the marine environment.

In addition to direct interaction on the beaches, the teams of environmental educators also visited bars, cafés, and restaurants near the coast, with the aim of extending the campaign’s message to hospitality businesses and their customers, reinforcing the idea that reducing plastic and promoting responsible consumption are collective tasks.

The initiative was also supported by extensive media and social media coverage, with radio spots and mentions on local and regional stations, as well as daily content on all Cantabria Circular platforms, including videos, posts, and infographics with key campaign messages.

The campaign is part of the actions included in Cantabria’s Circular Economy Strategy and is framed within the European project PLAST4H2, funded by the Interreg Atlantic Area 2021–2027 programme and led by the University of Cantabria. This plan seeks to reduce the presence of plastics in the oceans through research, innovation, and citizen awareness.

With initiatives like this, the goal is to raise awareness of the importance of every small gesture: choosing reusable products, reducing the use of single-use plastics, and disposing of waste in the correct container. All of this contributes directly to the health of the sea and the sustainability of the planet.
